At Rivermead we welcome students with special educational needs and disabilities as part of our community and we aim to ensure that all students have equal opportunities and access to engage in a broad and balanced curriculum. We have a 'whole school' policy to support children with special educational needs, both with and without Education, Health and Care plans. The term 'special educational needs' refers equally to children with additional learning needs.

Some of our students will need additional support to ensure access to the whole curriculum. To achieve this we work in partnership with parents and carers, valuing their views and contributions and keeping them fully involved in their child’s education. The child is also involved, where possible, in decision making about their support. We believe that the effective education of students with SEND can only be achieved through a whole school approach endorsed enthusiastically by all staff.

Daily management of the SEND department is carried out by the Inclusion Manager, Lisa Tomlin, who is part of the Senior Leadership team and is also SENDCo.The Inclusion Manager works closely with Laura Terry, EYFS and KS1 SENDCo.

The school benefits from a skilled team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). We organise staffing to provide as many opportunities as possible. Some of the team have specialist roles to support specific areas of need such as: Autism (ASD), Speech and Language (SALT) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH). In addition, some members of the team support students specifically with curriculum areas, such as Reading, Writing and Maths.

It is the responsibility of the SENDCo’s to assess, identify and diagnose individual needs. The SENDCo’s also offer advice to staff on resources, materials and teaching strategies.

Children at all stages of the SEND register have Individual Education Plans (IEP’s). We discuss and review these with children and parents as the year progresses. Where necessary the school works with outside agencies to meet the needs of children, for example with Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language therapists and Medical Services.
